English Bay
The birth place of Vancouver tourism.
In all seasons and weather, there is something special and rejuvenating about reconnecting with the rhythms of the ocean. English Bay makes the Pacific Ocean accessible year round. When the street cars first arrived in 1900s they brought thousands of beachgoers down Davie to the shores of English Bay in the summer. By 1920, the first Polar Bear Swim in January captured the west coast spirit. The sea walk and beach have always been favorite spring and fall strolls for the area’s apartment dwelling residents.
Today, English Bay is home to Vancouver’s only west facing plaza which boast Yue Minjun’s wildly fun and popular A-maze-ing Laughter public artwork.
On nearly every summer evening, scores of people outside of the West End make their way down to English Bay. And it’s easy to see why. Nestled along the seawall in the bustling West End with majestic Stanley Park to the right and spectacular ocean views ahead, it’s difficult to think of a more iconic Vancouver spot.
