West End Walkabout

I’m Matt Hanns Schroeter and super excited to take you on this virtual tour of the West End, showing some old and new favourite spots around the neighbourhood. Since coming here 7 years ago, it’s been an awesome neighbourhood to get familiar with.

Home to JJ Bean Coffee Roasters (1209 Bidwell Street), the restored Maxine’s Hideaway building makes for a calming spot to grab a coffee close to English Bay. Any spot around is good to sit in—by the lofty arched windows, small tables, or the outside patio facing Davie.

The waffles at Nero Belgian Waffle Bar (1703 Robson Street) are perfect for a sweet snack or dessert. The charming spot has a few tables to sit and enjoy the dishes inside and out, or you can pick up a box of mini waffles to take home.

If you’re in the mood for matcha while walking down Robson, Capstone Tea & Fondue (1429 Robson Street) is the place to go. It’s got some nice chocolate/cheese fondue sets, and tasty mini cheesecakes too. 

Just off Davie Street between Jervis & Bute you’ll find Little Sister’s Book & Art Emporium (1238 Davie Street), with its iconic neon sign marking the spot. It has a pretty wide selection of LGBTQ related literature and products—a great stop to get a sense of the history and culture of the West End.

If you find yourself near Robson & Denman, check out SPAGHeTÉI (1741 Robson Street) for a Japanese twist on spaghetti dishes. This cozy spot is a nice break from some of the busier joints nearby, and the friendly service is great. Be sure to try their signature Mentaiko dish if you like seafood, or the Chicken Peperoncino for something a little more traditional.

The homey feel of Zeitoon Restaurant (1795 Pendrell Street) pairs nicely with its fresh, hearty plates of Persian cuisine. Any of the skewer and rice dishes are worth a try—especially the chicken and torsh tenderloin.
